ROSWELL, Ga. – The Roswell Fire Department is adopting a new schedule as part of a pilot program to improve firefighter health and well-being, featuring a 48/96-hour work cycle with a delayed start time.

The department adopted the new schedule in response to health issues associated with chronic sleep deprivation, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety. 11Alive reported.

The aim is to facilitate recovery by providing firefighters with longer rest periods. Additionally, to further support this goal, shifts will now start at 11:00.

“The health, safety and quality of life of our firefighters are paramount,” said Fire Chief Joe Pennino. “We anticipate that this new initiative will improve our team’s mental and physical health outcomes, which are essential to maintaining high levels of service to our community.”

The six-month pilot program will evaluate its effectiveness based on data collected from medical examinations, operational performance and job satisfaction among firefighters and their families.
