Summertime Cougar Success Academy, which helps first-time college students transition into college

The new Cougar Success Academy at Columbus State University will give prospective students a taste of college life. As the name suggests, it’s about preparing students for academic success, but academy planners also emphasize that the program is packed with summer fun.

“Our Cougar Success Academy is all about getting ahead and staying ahead,” said Dr. Melissa Young, director of CSU Advise, whose team of advisors advises students on a variety of issues, from selecting majors to selecting majors. “This will allow students to start their studies more easily and experience our campuses in a more relaxed atmosphere.”

Registration for Cougar Success Academy ends on June 3, and students start the first day of classes on July 1. The four-week summer program will enable Columbus State’s newest students to:

  • Complete two college courses: American Government and Public Speaking.
  • Make friends in smaller classes and through social activities.
  • Develop exceptional note-taking, study and test-taking habits to excel in your studies.
  • Take advantage of tutoring, workshops and seminars to ensure your college’s success.
  • Take advantage of campus services such as dining halls, residence hall housing, and recreational programs.
  • Get to know their advisors and professors.
  • Have fun this summer.

Young said the Cougar Success Academy will provide students with the support they need to confidently begin college life.

“First-time college students often have concerns about whether they will succeed and manage their independence in a dynamic environment, while their families worry about students’ ability to live independently and adapt to society. Our Cougar Success Academy aims to equip students with the skills and confidence to overcome these doubts,” she said.

REGISTRATION UNTIL JUNE 3

The program is open to all high school graduates entering their freshman year at Columbus State, but space is limited. After paying the $25 registration fee, remaining program costs vary depending on whether Cougar Success Academy participants live on campus or commute for the duration of the program. Financial aid can be applied to fees for students who complete the 2023-2024 Federal Application for Free Financial Aid (FAFSA) for summer 2024.

The deadline to register, pay the $25 registration fee and complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA is Monday, June 3.
