Driver sentenced to seven years in prison after double fatal crash in Cambridge

A driver has been jailed for seven years after two people died in a crash in Cambridge.

On May 12, 2022, Justin Maurice, 21, was driving a Hyundai north on Hespeler Road when he sideswiped a southbound Toyota. The Toyota overturned, killing 51-year-old Randy Turenne of Cambridge.

The passenger in the Hyundai was Maurice’s co-worker, Alexander Brown, 30, from Pickering. He was also killed.

Maurice suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. A few months later he was charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of reckless driving causing death.

He pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

On Friday morning, Maurice was sentenced to seven years in prison and banned from driving for 10 years, minus any time he has already spent off the road.

Maurice is also prohibited from possessing weapons or ammunition.

Randy is missing

Last month, in an interview with CTV News, Kim Turenne shared the heartache of missing her husband.

“It’s blue. I’m still shaking,” she told CTV News.

She said there wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t miss Randy.

“I miss his hugs. I miss his calming presence, support and love. It was always there, no matter what,” she said.

The new mother is in mourning

Sabika Kashani was three months pregnant when her husband Alexander Brown was murdered.

“Our daughter was robbed of her father. We were deprived of the chance to be a family,” she said, reading a victim impact statement in court.

Brown asked the judge for justice, calling the “devastating consequences” too painful to bear.
