The spouse and parents of a fallen Fountain police officer are speaking out after his conviction

A memorial has been placed on a Fountain police cruiser honoring Officer Julian Becerra, who died after falling 40 feet from a bridge.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Days after a jury convicted Devon Bobian of murder in the death of Fountain Police Officer Julian Becerra, the fallen officer’s spouse and parents told FOX31 about the guilty verdict.

On Monday, May 13, Bobian was convicted of second-degree murder, as well as aggravated robbery, menacing, eluding a vehicle and aggravated theft of a motor vehicle in the first degree.

“When we heard the verdict, we had to relive a lot of the trauma and pain we went through,” said Vanessa Becerra, the officer’s ex-wife. “My daughter lost an important person in her life and a big piece of her heart that she will never be able to get back.”

While she and her family were honoring the officer in Washington, D.C., she learned of the sentencing.

“We managed to get some closure. Some kind of closure and understanding,” she said.

Becerra’s father, Gabriel, also opened up.

“We were happy. We know the verdict will not bring Officer Julian back, but justice is served and hopefully justice will be served,” Gabriel said.

The family remembers the events of February 2, 2023

The family still remembers the devastating news they heard on February 2 last year. A K-9 officer with more than four years of experience responded to a robbery and carjacking that led to a high-speed chase. While trying to capture Bobian, Becerra fell 40 feet off a bridge.

He died a few days later in hospital as a result of his injuries, leaving behind his wife and two small children.

Becerra’s daughter, Isabella, created a teddy bear for her dad after he died and, according to her mother, she carries it everywhere.

“She (Isabella) made this teddy bear for her dad not long after he died,” Vanessa said. “He has carried it with him ever since. He is always there for her.”

8-year-old Isabella also carries a stuffed K-9 and wears bracelets and a T-shirt in honor of her father, who always made her smile.

“She wishes she could call him whenever she needs him, but that’s not possible anymore,” Vanessa said. “I miss him every day.”

The family relied on their faith to keep going.

“That’s one of the things that makes it a little easier to keep going because God is good and Jesus is great,” Gabriel said.

A tragic situation will always have a huge impact on their lives. They hope Becerra’s legacy will live on.

“He was a very funny person. He loved to make (Isabella) laugh,” Vanessa said. “He loved to joke and was just a very goofy, loving person. A great dad and a dedicated policeman.”

The sentence has not yet been determined. Bobian, who has a long criminal record, will appear in court again in July.

“We need support for our police officers, no matter how we can support them,” Gabriel said. “Moral, just thank them”

Bobian faces 16 to 96 years in prison.
