Mayor says gun violence is decreasing; 5 investigations find waiting time for justice is high

THANK YOU SARA. MEANWHILE, MAYOR WU SAYS ARMOR VIOLENCE IS OFF, BUT FIVE INVESTIGATORS LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. OUR BRITTANY JOHNSON HERE NOW. SO BRITTANY YOU’VE DONE THAT THIS IS NOT THE WHOLE STORY. THIS IS CORRECT. THIS IS NOT THE WHOLE STORY. SO LISTEN. THE CITY’S DATA SHOWS THERE HAVE BEEN 19 SHOOTINGS SO FAR THIS YEAR, BUT WHEN WE DIG DEEP, WE FOUND THERE ARE NO GENERAL HAPPENINGS, BUT THEY HAVE NOT BEEN MENTIONED TODAY. THIS MEANS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WAITING FOR JUSTICE IN THESE CASES REMAIN HIGH. IN 2018, FIVE INVESTIGATIONS CONCLUDED THAT IN 2019, A TOTAL OF 174 SHOOTING ACCIDENTS OCCURRED. THEIR NUMBER WAS SLEEPING BUT IN 2020 THEIR NUMBER INCREASED TO 235 AND THEN DECREASED IN 2021 AND 2022. THE MAYOR SAYS THEY WERE ALSO LOWER LAST YEAR. BUT WHEN WE LOOK AT THE FAMILIES IN THESE CASES STILL WAITING FOR JUSTICE, OUT OF ALMOST 1,000 SHOOTINGS, THERE WERE ARRESTS, AND OF THEM 200, ONLY 23% OF THE 184 MURDERS, IN 74 OF THEM THERE WAS A FACTOR OF REGISTRATION WITH WORK, OR 40%. WE FOUND THESE NUMBERS FROM BOSTON POLICE COMMISSIONER MICHAEL COX, WHO SAID THE DEPARTMENT IS WORKING TO IMPROVE ARREST RATES AND WE ALSO CALLED FOR HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY, WITNESSES AND SURVIVORS TO GET MORE ON GUN VIOLENCE AND ITS IMPACT ON CITY AND WATCH OUR ENTIRE INVESTIGATION, VISIT WCVB.COM.
