Officer serves a drug arrest warrant; the suspect is at risk of having his battery charged

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A Mount Vernon officer with the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) has issued a drug arrest warrant. Now the suspect faces battery charges.

MVPD says that on May 29, an MVPD officer spotted what he knew was Tony Thompson, 54, of Mt Vernon, in the yard of a home at 200 West 10th Street in Mount Vernon. Police say the officer knew there was an active Posey County methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia petition suppression warrant. Police say once the officer confirmed the warrant was still valid, he exited the patrol car to make contact with Thompson.

Officials say Thompson shouted, “I’m not going back to jail,” and turned to run away. Officers say Thompson ignored his commands to stop and ran into a home on 10th Street. MVPD says the officer chased Thompson home and managed to catch him. Authorities say Thompson continued to flee by force, but was subdued by the officer. MVPD says other officers arrived to help secure Thompson.

Police say the officer suffered non-life-threatening hand injuries as a result of the incident. Thompson underwent medical examination at a local hospital and was then transported to the Posey County Jail.

Thompson now faces new charges in addition to the existing warrant. His charges are:

  • Order to quash application for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia
  • Battery against a public security officer
  • Interfering with public safety
