Mohamed Camara24 years old, defensive midfielder playing for a Ligue 1 team Monaco, was suspended for four matches for covering an LGBTQ+ support logo on the final match day of the French league last weekend.

Monaco coach Adi Hütter stated after the 4-0 victory over Nantes that covering the crests was “personal choice” representative of Mali. Hütter also added: “There will be an internal discussion with him about this situation. I will not comment further.”

Camara himself has not said anything publicly about why he covered the logo, but French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said on Monday on French radio station RTL: “This is unacceptable behavior.”

The French league’s disciplinary committee issued a statement saying Camara’s refusal “to carry out one or more activities aimed at raising awareness of the fight against homophobia” led to his suspension.

This is the second incident of this type in Ligue 1, as Nantes fined Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed for similar reasons.

Mohamed did not play again last Sunday, and Camara did not take part in a match last season that carried out the same awareness campaign.
