Actress Charlyne Yi complains of physical and psychological abuse on the set of TV series “Time Bandits”

Actress and comedian Charlyne Yi alleges that she suffered “repeated physical violence” and “emotional abuse” from another actor on the set of “Time Bandits,” the upcoming Apple TV+ sci-fi series produced by Paramount Television Studios and directed and executive produced by Taika Waititi.

The series is a television adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 film of the same name, which, according to IMDb, “centers on a young boy who discovers a portal in his bedroom that allows time travel.”

Yi, 38, called out the show and addressed harassment by an unnamed actor in a May 7 Instagram post.

“I wasn’t safe, supported or protected. The actor repeatedly physically attacked me and also mentally abused me,” they said, alleging that “co-workers, producers and HR departments gassed them” and “forced them to leave.” The actor also said he was denied compensation due to back injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder they claimed to have suffered while filming the series.

USA TODAY has reached out to Rep. Yi for comment.

“The safety of our cast and crew is very important to us and we take all concerns reported to us very seriously,” Paramount Television Studios said in a statement to USA TODAY on Thursday. “At the time the complaint was filed, Paramount Television Studios had conducted a full investigation into the allegations brought to our attention. While all investigations are confidential and we cannot comment on specifics, additional steps have been taken to address concerns.”

According to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly, the incident occurred 18 months ago and allegedly involved an actor running, bumping into and picking up Yi during a scene in the presence of other actors and crew. The person claimed that Yi’s claims could not be substantiated.

The source said Yi has not been denied compensation to the workers and their claim is being actively investigated by an external company. The person claimed that Yi was not “forced” to leave, but rather was given the option to stay on the show or leave without enforcing the contract. The source also said that Yi was paid for all of the guaranteed episodes even though she did not appear in any of them.
