Lexia offers a library of ideas for summer activities at home that teachers can share with their students’ families

BOSTON As summer classes come to an end, teachers can help students and their families turn literacy learning into summer fun. Lexia, a brand of Cambium Learning Group, offers over 50 activities that teachers can offer to families to help students maintain and even accelerate their learning over the summer break.

“Research shows that students can lose up to two months of reading skills during the summer,” said Lexia’s director of instruction, Dr. Liz Brooke. “To address this learning loss, we are providing a carefully curated selection of fun, easy activities to help beat the ‘summer slide’ and ensure students are ready for the new school year.”

One example of an educational game for kindergarten through fourth grade students helps them improve their knowledge of words and their components by drawing letters, sight words, or parts of words – such as prefixes and suffixes – on the ground with chalk. The student can jump to each item and read it aloud, like in a game of hopscotch. In the case of prefixes or suffixes, young students can name the word that contains this part of the word. Bonus points for using this word in a sentence!

Below are examples of words or word components that can be used at each grade level.

Kindergarten First class Second class Third grade Fourth grade
letters of the alphabet could sweet horse- -ness
They once weird pink- -ous
four With giggle were- -ment
Where was easy Badly- -essence
If To have friend professional- -ly
Over there Very happy NO- -full
he said go moisture With regard- -tion

Lexii’s Summer Literacy website has links to over 40 other ideas for developing literacy skills at home. Students and their families can participate in activities such as:

● Bingo® Summer Reading Challenge for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade

● Read @ Home games and projects for preschoolers and fifth graders

● Family game nights for elementary, intermediate and young adult readers

● Understanding informational text for early readers

● Multi-sensory word challenges for children in kindergarten through fifth grade

● Reading-related art classes for beginning readers and high school students

● Exercise classes for children, from the youngest readers to junior high school students

In addition, Lexia presented ideas to encourage children to read at home and to help beginning readers practice matching speech sounds to the correct written letters.

“Teachers know how important summer learning can be, and with our reading-based, game-like activities, students can see how much fun learning can be,” added Dr. Brooke. “By sharing these summer home activities with families, teachers can provide additional support that will enable continued learning during the summer months and plant the seeds that will make their students lifelong learners.”
