2 EBR deputies hit by gunfire;  the suspect is dead

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Two East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies and a suspect were shot and killed while executing a drug warrant in Baton Rouge on Thursday morning, June 6.

One of the deputies was taken to the hospital in serious condition. A second deputy wearing a bulletproof vest was shot and was not injured. The suspect died on the spot.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. at a home in the 5600 block of Robertson Avenue near Hollywood Street while DEA task force members were executing a warrant. EBR sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

The deputy, who was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, is expected to survive, EBRSO spokesman Casey Hicks said.

An East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy was taken to the hospital in serious condition after being shot in Baton Rouge on Thursday morning, June 6.

Law enforcement explained that when the shooting occurred, they were conducting a “sweep and declare” search warrant as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. According to reports, they announced over a loudspeaker that they were entering the house, and then two people came out.

According to the sheriff’s office, law enforcement officers entered to clear the home and encountered the suspect, who fired shots at the officers, who returned fire.

The suspect’s identity has not been released, but authorities confirmed he was an adult male.
