SILCHAR: A 27-year-old man arrested three months ago for raping a teenage girl was found dead in Silchar Central Jail on Tuesday morning, jail officials said.
A prison official said the man was missing during an inmate count Tuesday morning. During a search around 11:00 a man was found hanging in a building under construction on the premises of the main prison. He was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for post-mortem and the body was later handed over to his family. The police suspect the death was a suicide.
His family alleged that the man, who earned his living as a carpenter, was framed in a false rape case and became depressed over not receiving bail.
They said he was in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl, a neighbor who, under pressure from her family who did not approve of the relationship, filed rape charges against him.
His family also released audio recordings they said were recordings of the teenager’s phone conversations with the rape accused to show that they were in a relationship and waiting for the girl to turn 18.
In one recording, a man can be heard talking about suicide in connection with the case, while a woman’s voice talks about family pressure to press rape charges.
