SYRACUSE, NY – Firefighters rescued a child from a car trapped under rubble possible house explosion on Tuesday, firefighters said.

Eleven people, including children, were taken to hospital after the collapse at 205 Carbon St. just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Two of the injured were in serious condition, Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds said.

Early Wednesday morning, firefighters provided more details about the rescue operation.

Firefighting teams tried to free a child trapped in a car under the rubble. According to the fire brigade, the child was taken to hospital. On Tuesday, Monds said firefighters did not know whether the car hit the house.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in the home and worked to strengthen the remaining structure. Specially trained firefighters entered the building to search for trapped people. They spent 45 minutes searching and found no one.

Firefighters said the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control in Albany sent a team of search dogs to comb through the debris. State police brought in a tracking dog.

Thirteen people from two families lived in the house before the collapse.

Firefighters said that while rescuers were working, the National Grid team used an excavator to turn off the gas supply.

A possible explosion has arrived during a heat wave. Due to the high temperature and humidity, firefighters from all over the city worked at the scene on a rotating basis. The Centro bus also served as a refrigerated truck for firefighters. Off-duty firefighters were called to work.
