Yankees announce lineup for Thursday’s game against Orioles

Thursday afternoon’s series finale between the Yankees and Orioles is much more than just a rubber match between two of the American League’s best teams.

This marks the return of Aaron Judge, who missed Wednesday’s game after being removed from Tuesday’s series opener after being struck in the left hand by a ball.

Yankees fans had to hold their breath considering that two days earlier, Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts had suffered a broken left hand after being hit on the field and would likely be sidelined until mid-August.

Fortunately, manager Aaron Boone said Judge will only be on a “day-to-day basis” and he’s “hopeful” he’ll be back in the starting lineup this afternoon after avoiding a serious injury.

After a terrible April in which he had a batting average of just .220 and only six home runs, Judge has been on fire since. The former American League MVP has recorded 20 runs scored and 46 RBI since the calendar flipped to May, and his batting average has increased from .197 on May 2 to .302 in late June.

Aaron Judge MVP Odds

Even with his early withdrawal from the game on Tuesday, Judge is still the heavy favorite among New Jersey sportsbooks at -125 odds (bet $125 to win $100) to win his second AL MVP award.

Thursday’s Yankees-Orioles game

On the mound for the Bronx Bombers will be none other than Luis Gil. The 26-year-old scored his ninth win of the season for the Yankees, winning 8-1 over the Red Sox at Fenway Park on June 14. Gil is currently the favorite at -185 odds (bet $185 to win $100) to take home the AL Rookie of the Year as he has made huge strides to start the year in the absence of ace Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees’ opponent will be Cole Irvin, who has been one of the Orioles’ most consistent starters this year. While the 30-year-old southpaw has a solid showing in 2024, it’s worth noting that he’s given up eight or more hits in all three starts in June and is 0-2 with an ERA of 8.31 against the Yankees in three appearances in his six-year career career career year.
