Man United ‘preparing’ to trigger Joshua Zirkzee’s release clause amid ‘serious interest’ in signing

Manchester United wants to trigger the release clause in Joshua Zirkzee’s contract this summer.

Manchester United Football Club needs to significantly strengthen its squad during the summer transfer window. Transfers are needed in several positions, including the striker position, especially after the departure of Anthony Martial.

Rasmus Hojlund needs help. The young Dane performed quite well during his debut campaign in the Theater of Dreams, although his youthful inconsistencies are still visible. Bringing in someone who can compete with the former Atalanta player would make sense.

Among the names associated with filling the Martial-shaped hole is Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee. Transfer rumors about the striker quickly grew.

Now, in their transfer roundup, the usually reliable Telegraph has shared a piece of information on Zirkzee, claiming that United are “preparing to trigger” the release clause in his contract in order to sign the player. The figure is £33.8 million.

United are said to be “in talks” with the Zirkzee camp and while they are also considering other options, there is “serious interest” in signing the Dutch striker from Bologna.

Although the pre-sale budget is around £50 million, Manchester United will have to be smart with their money and spend it wisely. While the money is expected to be raised through some sale, it’s conceivable that Erik ten Hag won’t have much more than £80m to spend when all is said and done. Is spending half that amount on a reserve striker the best use of the money? I’m not so sure about that.

I think for now it’s a matter of figuring out what kind of revenue can be generated from player sales, and Mason Greenwood seems to be a prime candidate to play.
