Two inmates accused of beating up a man in prison for using racial slurs

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. – Monroe County Jail inmates will face charges after they reportedly attacked an inmate after he uttered a racial slur and accused them of having an “affair.”

DeJuan Kelley and Ian Thorpe were charged with:


  • Fleeing, a Level 4 Felony
  • Battery, a level 5 felony

According to court documents, detectives were called to the Monroe County Jail in reference to an assault that occurred between inmates at the facility. The suspected inmates were held together and reportedly opened the cell and then chased the other inmate up the stairs to the lower cell block. The alleged victim remembers waking up on the floor of the apartment building.

Thorpe claimed the inmate’s reported victim called him an “ab****” and racial slurs. Court documents also indicate that the victim may have alluded to the couple’s “affair” because they were talking to each other at 2 a.m. and disturbing his rest.

The attacked inmate was then taken to a local hospital for serious injuries.
