A man arrested after more than 27 years on the run has been charged with new crimes related to child sexual abuse.

RIchard Burrows was detained at Heathrow Airport in March after returning to the UK from Thailand.

The 80-year-old, accused of historical child sexual abuse, had been wanted since December 1997 when he failed to appear for a trial at Chester Crown Court.

Failure to appear in court led to him becoming one of Britain’s most wanted fugitives for the next two decades.

He was originally charged with two counts of burglary and 11 counts of indecent assault in connection with allegations of abuse that occurred at a children’s home in Congleton, Cheshire, between 1969 and 1971 and in the West Midlands between 1971 and 1981.

As Cheshire Police announced today, the Crown Prosecution Service has brought a further 27 charges against him.

They include 20 cases of indecent assault, one case of burglary, three cases of taking indecent images of children and four cases of intentionally possessing a false ID.

These additional charges relate to 11 victims and the alleged offenses took place between 1966 and 1996 in areas of Cheshire, the West Midlands and West Mercia.

Burrows’ next court appearance is at Chester Crown Court on August 2 this year.
