14 moments in “Twilight” that were supposed to be serious but turned out to be comedy gold

  • “Twilight” (2008) is a drama, but some moments are funnier than they probably had to be.

  • Some scenes, like Edward revealing he is a vampire, are too dramatic to be taken seriously.

  • It’s hard to watch grown people hiss and growl at each other during fight scenes.

Bella hits Jacob with the door of her truck.

Immediately after Charlie (Billy Burke) gives Bella (Kristen Stewart) his truck, she opens the front door and hits Jacob (Taylor Lautner) with it as he tries to get around the front of the car.

This moment was probably intended to highlight Bella’s clumsiness, but it seems so unintentional that it feels more like a faux pas.

He also takes celery from someone’s lunch and puts it to his face without eating it.

When Bella eats lunch on her first day at Forks High School, she holds a piece of celery – which apparently came from Jessica’s (Anna Kendrick) tray – to her face but doesn’t eat it.

The way Bella clumsily holds her food is evident throughout the video, and it’s hard not to laugh when she talks while gesturing with a vegetable.

The Cullens’ introductory sequence is full of details that make this moment more funny than impressive.

Bella first sees Edward (Robert Pattinson) when the Cullens enter the cafeteria.

All five vampire “siblings” dramatically enter the room in bright outfits, except for Edward, who wears his usual darker clothes.

Although the scene is meant to show how intimidating the vampire coven is, their introduction is so dramatic that it’s actually funny, especially with details like Alice (Ashley Greene) spinning around and Emmett (Kellan Lutz) holding a large bag of eggs.

Edward reacts comically when he smells Bella for the first time.

Even though Edward stares at Bella in the cafeteria, her scent doesn’t really hit him until she enters their study hall.

Edward immediately tenses and covers his nose and mouth with his hand as the fan carries her scent.

It’s a fun scene to watch without knowing why Edward is reacting the way he is, especially when Bella sits next to him sniffing herself.

Notably, “Midnight Sun” – a book by “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer from Edward’s point of view – revealed that he was trying not to kill Bella and her classmates when she entered.

When Bella asks Edward about the change in his eye color, he blames the lighting and abruptly leaves.

When Edward and Bella are talking in the hallway after science class, Bella asks if he has been wearing contact lenses since she noticed his eyes changed color.

In response, Edward says, “They’re fluorescent lights,” and simply walks away.

It was strange that Edward, who had been in the habit of pretending to be human for almost a hundred years, was caught off guard when someone asked about it.

Bella can’t stop hanging around the kitchen talking to Charlie.

While talking to Charlie in the kitchen, Bella pours herself a glass of water. He takes a single sip and then downs the rest, all the while fidgeting awkwardly at the sink.

As Bella drains her glass, an entire case of water is clearly visible on the counter next to her.

Even though the scene shows that Charlie and Bella are not yet used to being in each other’s company, Bella’s inability to stand somewhere without doing an awkward task is quite funny.

Bella’s friends stare at her and Edward as they talk in the lunch line.

Bella is the first student to get close to Edward and the rest of the Cullens, so her friends have to get used to his presence.

When Edward and Bella are talking in the lunch line, all of her friends stare at them. Some are more subtle – like Angela (Christian Serratos) – but Mike (Michael Welch) and Eric (Justin Chon) don’t look away throughout the entire scene.

Their glaring glances in the background are impossible to ignore once they are noticed.

The scene where Bella imagines Edward drinking from her might be the campiest part of the movie.

There are many moments in Twilight that are hard to take seriously, but the most absurd takes place in Bella’s mind as she investigates vampires.

Bella imagines Edward biting her, and he looks more like a traditional vampire than in the rest of the series, as they are both wearing early 20th century formal clothes.

The absurd costume combined with Bella lying passed out on the couch makes this scene absurd.

A scene intended to show how dangerous vampires are may be one of the funniest.

Edward finally tells Bella that he is a vampire when they talk in the forest, where she sees his body glistening in the sun.

Trying to prove how dangerous vampires are, he shows his strength and speed by running up trees and jumping on various objects. This moment even includes wide camera shots and dramatic lines of Edward shouting at Bella.

While this moment is meant to convince Bella and the audience that vampires are terrifyingly strong, Pattinson’s facial expressions as he screams about supernatural powers can be quite funny.

The “romantic” piano scene between Bella and Edward comes out of nowhere and contrasts sharply with the second plot point.

After Edward brings Bella home to meet his family, the pair go into the forest and to the top of a tree to admire the views.

The next scene shows Edward playing “Bella’s Lullaby” for her, which is immediately followed by a clip of Charlie and the rest of the police searching for the cause of the deaths of people in Forks.

The tonal shift between the romantic melody and the police search is strange.

Between the hissing and growling, the confrontation between the vampires and the coven is strange to watch.

The Cullens’ matching baseball jerseys will make the moment even more fun.Entertainment at the top

A coven of rogue vampires encounters the Cullens when Laurent (Edi Gathegi), James (Cam Gigandet) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) interrupt their baseball game.

When James smells Bella and realizes she is human, all the vampires join in the battle.

The sight of a group of adults growling and hissing at each other and jumping up and down is too funny to be considered intimidating, and the Cullens’ matching baseball jerseys only make it worse.

Rosalie rubbing Bella’s scent into the tree looks too weird to fit the serious tone of the scene.

The Cullens create a fake scent line that the tracker vampire, James, follows in hopes of stopping him from finding Bella.

To do this, Rosalie (Nikki Reed) puts on Bella’s clothes and runs through the forest, brushing against trees, leaving a clear trail.

Even though this scene is supposed to be serious, watching Rosalie look annoyed as she leans against a tree is downright comical.

The tape James uses as bait shows a young Bella saying she “sucks” at dancing.

It is unclear who shot the video.Entertainment at the top

James tricks Bella into thinking he is holding her mother (Sarah Clarke) hostage by playing a videotape of Renée frantically talking to her.

When Bella arrives at the dance studio and finds the video playing, it shows a younger version of herself, nervous in her recital clothes, saying that she sucks at dancing.

Since Bella and her mother have been alone for years, there is no clear explanation as to who would be recording Bella during her recitals, let alone why someone would choose to film her talking about how badly she dances.

There are too many moments in James and Edward’s fight where grown men growl at each other.

The vampire fights in this movie are hard to take seriously because they show people growling and hissing.

James and Edward’s fight is probably the most irritating in the movie, as both men stare at each other with their faces a few inches apart and make “menacing” noises.
