The death toll rose to 53, seven people arrested in connection with the Kallakurichi tragedy |  India news

On Saturday, authorities said the death toll from the Kallakurichi Hooch tragedy rose from 50 to 53.

Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth said that of the total 193 patients who consumed illicit liquor, 140 are now safe.

“193 people who consumed illegal alcohol were taken to hospital. Of these, 193,140 are currently safe and several of them are on ventilators. Currently, 53 people have died,” he said.

“Seven people have been arrested in the case so far. The case was handed over to the CBI CID wing of the Tamil Nadu Police. Patients are provided with the best treatment. At the initial stage, special doctors were mobilized. Around 56 doctors from various medical colleges were brought in and many patients who had breathing problems also recovered,” Kallakurichi Collector said.

Meanwhile, in connection with the death in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, 250 liters of illicit alcohol was seized and disposed of in the state’s Tiruchirapalli district.

The action was taken by Tiruchirapalli District Collector Pradeep Kumar and Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar based on intelligence received on Friday evening, police said.

District Collector Pradeep Kumar spoke to the residents and made them aware of the harmful effects of illicit alcohol. He also made them take an oath not to consume illegal alcohol.

Addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly session, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the state government would bear the entire education and accommodation expenses of children who lost one or both parents in the Kallkurichi tragedy.

There was confusion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly as opposition AIADMK members raised slogans demanding discussion on the Kallakurichi Hooch tragedy.
