The Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Craig

The Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office have released information regarding an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Craig man Friday evening.

According to a news release from the Craig Police Department, Craig Police Department officers and a Moffat County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the incident.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., Craig Police and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence at the Cedar Mountain Trailer Park located at 925 W. 1st Street in Craig on a report of a man with a gun. Upon arrival, the officer and deputy were confronted by a man brandishing a handgun. There was an officer-involved shooting.

Law enforcement officers provided medical assistance to the man until paramedics arrived on the scene. The suspect was transported to hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. According to the release, no further information is being released at this time.

According to Craig police, the investigation is in its early stages and initial information is subject to change. Members of the 14th District Critical Incident Response Team will continue to interview witnesses and people involved in this case in the coming days. Additional details will be released as appropriate, given the ongoing investigation.

The agencies involved are responsible for releasing the names of the officers/deputies involved. As is standard protocol in any officer-involved shooting, the officer and his deputy have been placed on paid administrative leave. The internal investigation will be conducted independently of the criminal investigation conducted by CIRT.

CIRT is investigating this incident. All officer-involved shootings in Moffat County are investigated by the 14th Judicial Circuit’s Critical Incident Response Team, which includes representatives from the Steamboat Police Department, Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Granby Police Department, Fraiser/Winter Park Police Department, Craig Police Department, Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

CIRT is activated when a law enforcement agency is involved in a critical incident to ensure an independent investigation. Because Moffat County Sheriff’s Office personnel and Craig Police Department personnel were involved in this incident, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation on behalf of CIRT.
