Firefighters battle 30-acre vegetation fire at Otay Open Space Reserve: Boundary Fire 58

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – Firefighters are battling a vegetation fire that burned more than 30 acres at the Otay Open Space Preserve on Saturday afternoon.

Cal Fire and San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters are working to extinguish a vegetation fire that broke out Saturday around 3:15 p.m. in the Otay Open Space Reservation, north of the Otay Truck Trail near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cal Fire initially reported that the fire – dubbed the Border 58 fire – was burning at 4 acres. Cal Fire said the fire spread to 20 acres in just 10 minutes and could potentially burn as much as 100 acres.

As of 4:15 p.m., the fire had spread to well over 30 acres and was burning in steep, rugged terrain in the Otay Open Space Wilderness, Cal Fire said in a video update on X, noting that the fire was burning at a critical rate of spread.

The ground operations of the fire brigade are supported by several tankers, and a total of 150 people are working to fight the fire.

No structures are threatened or evacuations are in progress at this time, however, a vegetation fire occurred near the George Bailey Detention Center and the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility.
