Raising Kanan picks up right where it left off.

After nearly dying during a mob attack in the season two finale, Queen Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller) will face a mountain of problems when the series returns. Not only does she have to deal with the dead bodies in her house, including Jukebox’s mother (Hailey Kilgore) and the people who tried to kill her people, but also the fact that her son Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis) knows Detective Malcolm Howard (Omar) Epps) he is actually his father. “Viewers can watch him deal with the consequences in real time,” says star Patina Miller.

Kanan knows what Howard and Raq have been hiding, and this mother-son bond couldn’t have been broken at a worse time. “The secret affects all of them individually and together, so they have to work as a family to solve their problems,” Miller says. “(Raq) knows he doesn’t have Kanan anymore, but he’s still trying to raise him.”

And it’s this relationship that Miller focuses on whenever he gets a script. “She’s a big boss, but her most important goal is always to keep her son connected,” he says. Because Kanan is aware of her manipulations and lies, Raq cannot catch her son in the usual way when he needs it most. Season 3 is about regaining that trust, which Miller says can be difficult. “Kanan is a man now, so this season (Raq) is terrified because she feels truly alone for the first time in her life,” she says.

This season, the ruthless businesswoman finds solace in an unlikely place: former rival Unique (Joey Bada$$). “Right now, it serves as a place for her to be herself,” Miller says. “He is comforting in this strange way.” Even though they have tried to kill each other in the past, it seems that this ongoing location of the latest mob strike provides an opportunity for them to support each other.

But don’t expect Raq to take a similar approach with his brother Lou-Lou (Malcolm Mays). “If you think about it, Raq raised Lou, so in some ways distancing himself from Lou and Kanan is difficult, but (he) is not a priority,” Miller explains.

While focusing on making things right with Kanan, Raq sees life differently this season. “As she sees her life flash before her eyes, she has a big plan: ‘I’m going to give it all up,’” Miller says. “One of the things is deciding it’s not worth it and her wanting to clean up her act.” If her commitment to doing right by Kanan means “going straight,” Raq will also have to deal with the much less exciting lives of ordinary people, and the question remains whether she can pull it off, especially considering what we know who Kanan becomes.

Raising Kanan returns for Season 3 on Friday, December 1 on Starz.
