More than 10 years have passed since Best boy introduced us to the Summerhouse estate, and in a bittersweet moment, the series finale arrived.

The hit series was initially a Channel 4 production, but was Netflix which revived it in 2019 and convinced the original cast – including Ashley Walters (who played Dushane) and Kane “Kano” Robinson (Sully) – to return alongside a host of newcomers.

Unfortunately, we must be the bearers of bad news. Here’s why a season six definitely isn’t happening…

The shock ending of season five

Top Boy’s jaw-dropping season four finale saw Michael Ward’s character Jamie being gunned down by Sully, but the writers managed to deliver an even more shocking twist in the final episode as Dushane and Sully been killed.

Dushane had been on the run from the police for Jeffrey’s murder, and when the finale began, he was hiding at his mother’s house, shortly after a young girl was killed by a pursuing police car.

With the help of Shelly (Little Simz) and in the midst of a riot in the estate, Dushane planned to leave the country – but not before jumping Jaq (Jasmine Jobson) and stealing drugs belonging to Sully to pay for your exit.

Sully seemed to have “won” the battle before the final, devastating twist.

Sully seemed to have “won” the battle before the final, devastating twist.

When Sully realized his old rival was behind the robbery, they ended up in a shootout that saw Junior (Micheal Maris) killed before Sully shot Dushane, who passed out as they competed for the last time.

Then, just when it looked like Sully had earned the title of “Top Boy”, the final scene of the series saw him shot dead by a mysterious assailant while sitting in his car.

What did the actors say?

Despite this cliffhanger ending, the actors insisted that there would be no more episodes of Top Boy.

The first two seasons were produced by Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, before being revived by Netflix in November 2019.

Talk to GQAshley Walters revealed that Netflix “wanted to continue forever,” but he and Kane “Kano” Robinson insisted it was time to put the series to bed.

(We) said, “Personally, we can’t. “We don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “It may have gone on too long anyway.

“It’s not that it hasn’t been great, and the seasons have all been great, and everyone loved them, and I loved them. But it wouldn’t have been fair. I like to finish in beauty.

Director William Stefan Smith, who oversaw the final two episodes, added to GQ that the plan was to “close the story with the greatest care and heart.”

The cast released a statement explaining the decision when it was announced that the fifth season would be the last.

“That being said, and staying true to our original goal, every story must have an ending, and so season (five) will be our finale. A chance to come full circle and end the journey the right way.
