A 4-year-old boy was rescued after surviving for almost 24 hours alone in the Californian woods

The sheriff’s office said a 4-year-old boy who went missing Thursday at a lake in Fresno County, California, has been found safe and sound after spending nearly 24 hours alone in the woods.

Members of the Tulare County Search and Rescue team found Christian Ramirez around 8 a.m. Friday, about a quarter-mile from where he was reported to have disappeared the day before. According to KFSN, a CNN affiliate, rescuers found Christian under a tree.

“We were fortunate this morning that when searchers called the boy, he called back,” Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Pursell told KFSN.

The sheriff’s office said Christian was tired and hungry but was in good condition. He was reunited with his parents.

“A lot of things could have gone really wrong in this case and we were lucky, the family was lucky. The boy is very, very happy to be with his family,” Pursell told CNN affiliate KABC.

Pursell told KABC that the child was found in a wooded area and “it was pretty clear that he was lost and hunkered down all night.” According to KFSN, the 3-foot-tall, 40-pound boy ventured through the woods at night wearing a T-shirt and shorts.

“Huntington is known to have bears. There are also possibilities of big cats up there. We also have snakes. There are lots of little dangers there. Slip and fall hazards and waterways,” Pursell said.

The family reported their son missing at the Rancheria Campground in Huntington Lake around 11 a.m. Thursday.

“In less than five minutes, he just disappeared,” Pursell said.

That’s when a search and rescue team, Air Support Unit, Forest Service rangers and California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers began searching for him in the northeastern area of Huntington Lake.

According to KFSN, dogs, helicopters and nearly 70 rescuers searched for Christian throughout the night.

“It was an incredible display of teamwork and dedication. “More than 50 deputies and volunteers participated in the search,” the sheriff’s office said. “This included members of other law enforcement agencies who assisted us by working non-stop throughout the night.”

The sheriff’s office said community efforts also helped rescue Christian and bring him home.

“Many people offered to help in the search, opened their eyes wide, spread the word on social media and sent prayers. All of this undoubtedly helped Christian return home safely,” the office said.
