Boy Meets World’s Trina McGee says Danielle Fishel called her to apologize for her experience on set

Trina McGee opens up about her relationship with her ex A boy meets the world costars, including Danielle Fishel.

McGee, who played Angela Moore on the beloved ABC series and in the reboot A girl meets the worldspoke in January about her negative experience as the show’s only black actress alongside an all-white cast that included Fishel, Will Friedle, Ben Savage and Rider Strong.

At the time, McGee, 50, even claimed that Friedle, 43, called her “Aunt Jemima” on set, but has since apologized.

But in a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, McGee said that Fishel, who she said “decided to be very close and not talk” when they worked together, recently apologized for his actions.

“When we talked about it recently, she called me to apologize,” McGee said. “She was going through a lot at the time. And I kind of gave that to her.”

Fishel’s rep did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

McGee went on to say that his relationship with Fishel is “decent,” adding that the two “are very complementary to each other.”

“She goes out of her way to say, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ ” said McGee. “Actually, she just sent me a cute photo of her baby.”

“I’m not trying to hang around and have a grudge against the girl,” McGee added of Fishel. “I’m just taking a small step toward confidence.”

Fishel publicly apologized to McGee on Twitter last month, when the actress was called out by a fan after posting a message of support for Black Lives Matter.

“I just want to know if there was any form of acceptance and apology from Trina McGee,” the fan wrote.

Fishel responded, “I owed @realtrinamcgee an apology for being rude, cold and distant when she performed on GMW (her tweet about warm hellos being met with cold, blank stares was about me). Trina and I talked over a month ago and she graciously accepted my apology.

During his interview with Yahoo Entertainment, McGee said that Friedle, who starred on the show as Eric Matthews, also recently apologized for his behavior on set.

“He said it’s been a journey for him since that day he called me Aunt Jemima,” McGee said. “And it was a journey of self-reflection, of thinking about what he had been taught to be acceptable to other cultures…that might hurt people.

The show was eventually rebooted with A girl meets the worldwhich ran from 2014 to 2017 on Disney Channel and followed the life of Cory and Topanga’s (Fishel) daughter, Riley.
