Live updates: A1 closed in both directions – serious collision involving a motorcycle

Lincolnshire Police are on scene leading the multi-agency response to this serious collision, alongside Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Lincolnshire and Nottingham Air Ambulance Trust.

Due to a serious collision, the A1 in Lincolnshire is currently closed southbound only between the A52 Barrowby and A607 Harlaxton near Grantham.

Northbound traffic has reopened, although 1 (of 2) lanes remain closed.

Police investigations into the collision are ongoing.

The A1 in Lincolnshire is closed in both directions between the A52 (Barrowby) and the A607 (Harlaxton) near Grantham due to a serious collision involving a motorbike.

Due to the nature of the incident, the police investigation into the collision will continue throughout the afternoon.

Traffic officers are also on site to assist with traffic management.

Detours

Southbound traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Square detour symbol:

  • Leave the A1 southbound at the A52 junction at Barrowby and turn left at the end of the slip road.
  • Continue for approximately 20km then take the first exit at Saxondale Roundabout and then the second exit at Bingham Interchange to join the A46 southbound towards Leicester.
  • Take the A46 southbound for approximately 7 miles and then take the junction with the A606 towards Nottingham/Melton Mowbray.
  • At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A606 eastbound and follow it for approximately 15 km to reach Melton Mowbray.
  • At Melton Mowbray turn left to join the A607 towards Grantham.
  • Stay on the A607 for approximately 23km to reach ‘Harlaxton Interchange’ and rejoin the A1.

Northbound traffic is advised to follow the Solid Square detour symbol:

  • Leave the A1 at the B1174 Little Ponton, continue on the B1174 to Grantham to the B1174/A52/A607 Bridge End Road/South Parade junction (Gainsborough Corner), then turn right (east) onto the A52.
  • Continue on the A52 roundabout to the A52/B6403. Turn left (east) and continue on the A52 to the A52/A15 roundabout, then turn left (north) onto the A15 and follow the A15 through Osbournby.
  • Continue straight through the A15/A153 Quarrington roundabout to the A17/A15 Holdingham roundabout, then turn left (west) onto the A17.
  • Continue for 4.4 miles to the A17/C208 Coddington roundabout, go straight ahead and continue along the A17 to the A1/A17/A46 roundabout, then continue straight onto the A46 roundabout to A46/A1 Brownhills.
  • Turn right (north) at Brownhills, taking the third exit onto the A1 northbound to rejoin the A1

Traffic on the northbound carriageway was temporarily stopped to allow the helicopter to land, and this is not happening at this time.

It is recommended that detour traffic follow the Hollow Square detour symbol:

  • Leave the A1 southbound at the A52 junction at Barrowby and turn left at the end of the slip road.
  • Continue for approximately 20km then take the first exit at Saxondale Roundabout and then the second exit at Bingham Interchange to join the A46 southbound towards Leicester.
  • Take the A46 southbound for approximately 7 miles and then take the junction with the A606 towards Nottingham/Melton Mowbray.
