Harry Maguire arrested in Greece after police hit: report

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is expected to be charged with aggravated assault following an incident with police in Mykonos, Greece, on Thursday evening, reports The Guardian.

The club has contacted Maguire and he is “fully cooperating” with police, the club said in a short statement.

Report: Maguire was verbally abusive, punched officer

According to reports, Maguire (27) is on vacation on the island of Mykonos and was with friends at a bar when the incident occurred. Greek media cited by The Guardian reported that Maguire and two friends got into a “very heated argument” with other English holidaymakers. The police were called to the scene and tried to break up the fight around midnight.

The officer told The Guardian that the footballer “verbally abused the officer and then punched him.”

From the Guardian:

“There were some policemen there. At one point, one of the three members of the group – they were 27, 28 and 29 years old – threw a punch at one of the policemen, which resulted in a fight,” added police spokesman Petros Vassilakis. “All three were arrested, but during this operation the other two, including the footballer, also became aggressive. They knocked down at least two policemen, punched and kicked them.

According to the report, they resisted arrest and were taken to the police station in Mykonos, from where they were then taken by boat to Syros, where they were to be charged with the prosecutor.

The South Aegean Police Directorate confirmed to CNN Sports that three British men allegedly threatened police officers and attacked one of them. They did not provide names.

According to reports, Manchester United issued a statement on Friday.

“The club is aware of the alleged incident involving Harry Maguire last night in Mykonos. Contact has been made with Harry and he is fully cooperating with the Greek authorities. We will be making no further comments at this time.”

United signed Maguire last summer for a world-record transfer fee for a centre-back. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær quickly made him captain.

Last season, the Red Devils finished third in the Premier League. On Monday, they lost to Sevilla 2-1 in the Europa League semi-final. United will kick off their 2020-21 EPL campaign on September 19.
