According to veteran reporter Dan Rafael, the surreal sequence of events that began with Ryan Garcia’s career-defining victory over Devin Haney has resulted in the boxer’s suspension for at least a year.

Garcia’s settlement with the New York State Athletic Commission will also reportedly result in him forfeiting his victory over Haney, and the fight will officially become a no-contest. He will be forced to forfeit his $1.1 million contract and pay a fine of $10,000, the state maximum.

Garcia soon confirmed on social media that his victory had been voided and repeated his Wednesday announcement that he was ostensibly retiring.

He then suggested that a move to the UFC was in the works and called out UFC President Dana White.

Garcia’s team later released a statement calling him a “substance contamination victim” and stating that “fans will always remember his performance against Devin Haney as a masterclass.

Meanwhile, Haney welcomed the news that will see him go undefeated again with a record of 31-0 (1).

Garcia tested positive for Ostarine, listed by WADA as an anabolic agent, after defeating Haney by majority decision in April and soon his B sample also tested positive. This situation ruined a victory that could have catapulted Garcia to true boxing stardom thanks to three knockdowns of the WBC lightweight champion.

This victory already had an asterisk, as Garcia was over three pounds overweight, costing him $1.5 million as a result of an ill-advised bet he made with Haney the day before and the chance of Haney winning the WBC belt.

With his suspension looming, Garcia’s camp noted that two supplements the boxer declared to anti-doping authorities tested positive for Ostarine contamination, indicating Garcia did not knowingly ingest the substance. The lack of experience and the clean hair sample strengthened this argument.

Documents obtained by ESPN show that the disputed supplements are Raspberry-Lemonade NutraBio SuperCarb (which contained 70-2,200 picograms of ostarine per gram of powder) and Body Health strawberry-flavored amino acid blend (660-830 picograms). .

Garcia’s legal team indicated to ESPN that they believed only a four-month suspension was warranted, but the NYSAC apparently disagreed.

While the case of Garcia’s positive tests has been closed, it is just part of an incredibly tumultuous year for the boxer, who can be volatile at the best of times.

As of early 2024, Garcia has…

Against this backdrop, Garcia posted another tirade on social media on Wednesday, announcing, “I’m officially retiring” and “Y’all forget I exist.”

Given everything that has happened with Garcia over the past six months, it’s hard to take his retirement announcement seriously, but it’s also impossible to ignore. It is an absolute mystery when Garcia will fight next, and not just because of his suspension.
