Police in Pennsylvania said a 3-year-old boy left alone in a hotel room wandered into the street and was hit by a car.

Court records show the child’s mother, a 26-year-old from Wheeling, West Virginia, has been charged.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and the child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

According to a June 23 Facebook post by the Jefferson Hills Police Department, officers responded on June 22 to reports of a child struck by a vehicle on State Route 51 near Econo Lodge.

According to investigators, the child’s mother left the 3-year-old and 2-year-old alone in the hotel room.

The children left the building and walked along the road before one of them “was hit by a passing vehicle,” police said.

Police said the mother was arrested on June 23 on two charges: endangering the welfare of children.

McClatchy News is not naming the mother to protect the identities of the children involved.

She was booked into the Allegheny County Jail, authorities said.

Jefferson Hills is located approximately 25 miles south of Pittsburgh.
