16-year-old girl killed, 8-year-old injured in Queens hit-run

A 16-year-old girl was killed and her 8-year-old sister was critically injured in a hit-and-run outside a Queens school on Wednesday — the last day of the school year — police said.

The girls were in the crosswalk outside IS 125 Thom J. McCann on 47th Ave. near 46th St. in Sunnyside around 3:25 pm as the driver of a white Ford truck headed west on the avenue, according to cops.

As the driver made a left turn onto 46th St., he slammed into them and ran over the 16-year-old, police and sources said.

The teen’s younger sister was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, according to an NYPD chief on the scene.

There was no crossing guard on duty as students were released at 1 pm on Wednesday for the last day of school before summer break, the chief said.

As new graduates filed out of the middle school, the teen lay dying in the street with her mother by her side, according to a 15-year-old student who had just received his diploma.

“When I came out, she was on the ground,” Justin Castillo told the Daily News. “She was still alive but she looked like she lost a part of herself.”

The teen, whose name was not immediately released, died in the street.

“Her mother was trying to be strong but she was about to lose her mind,” said Castillo. “It was terrible.”

Police later recovered the truck about a block from the intersection and arrested the driver, cops on the scene said.
