Greek trade unions representing judges, prosecutors and lawyers on Thursday condemned the overnight petrol bomb attack on the residence of the president of the Supreme Court in Athens, during which a guard was injured.

“Criminal actions against judicial officials undermine democratic functioning and are intended to create an atmosphere of fear and tension throughout the judiciary, without achieving the intended goal,” the Association of Judges and Prosecutors said in a statement, adding that judges will not be discouraged from carrying out their duties.

In the same spirit, the Coordination Committee of the Plenary Assembly of the Greek Bar Associations stated that “violence, regardless of its source, has no place in democracy and the rule of law.”

In a speech on a Greek radio station, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis said that the perpetrators would be found and arrested.
