Sewanhak students receive research awards

This year, H. Frank Carey High School students enrolled in Introduction to Scientific Research and Scientific Research 1, 2, 3 and 4 courses competed and presented their work at science fairs and symposia.

Class-participating events were sponsored by the Long Island Science Congress (LISC), New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF), South Asian American Women’s Association (SAAWA), Regeneron Science Talent Search, Junior Science and the Humanities Symposium and the PSEG EM-Powered Program, as well as the Carey High School Science Fair and the Sewanhaka Central School District Science Research Symposium.

Students worked on their research projects throughout the academic year and presented their findings to both peers and professionals, including scientists and professors. Some students worked individually, others in pairs.

Winners in the junior category
Science Congress on Long Island

Junior Division
In the junior category, Onyx Karejwa, Shivani Pillai, Christopher Sebber and Allyson Xu earned high honors.
In addition to the high honors, Karejwa and Sebber’s project, “The Impact of Hydrocarbon Pollution on the Survival of Artemia salina,” won the Green Planet Award ($50).
Makayla Grill, Hannah John and Savannah Torregrossa also received honorable mentions in the junior category.
Additionally, the division recognized students Joseph Barker, Ella Barlow, Matthew Cangelosi, Nyrie Jeanty, Emma Kirrane, Lily Maglio, Valerie Morales Luna, Sophia Phan, Diya Prince, Emily VanDunk and Samantha Walter for the Meritorious Award.
Finally, Grady Govaert, Lucas Koehler, Haleigh Kolmos and Kylie Rapp received recognition.

Winners in the senior category:
Science Congress on Long Island

Senior Branch
In the senior division, Michelle Zheng won top honors as well as the Long Island Science Congress Award ($50) and the Director’s Award ($50) for her project, “Determining the Most Effective Technique for Lateral Ankle Ligament Surgery.”
Also receiving honors in the senior group were Ivan Chin, Jamie David, Christoper Dizon, Natalie Osorio, Daniele Russo and Annmarie Schurr.
Additionally, Ewan Byrne, Christina Daniel, Megan Heinimann, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel, Abeer Qureshi, Laeeba Samad and Fia Thomas won the Meritorious Award.
Vincenzo Mari and Gabriela Valentin received honorary mentions.

The following students are NYSSEF award winners aged 23-24:
Jamie David and Natalie Osorio won distinction in the Engineering category.
Michelle Zheng took first place
Abeer Qureshi and Laeeba Samad were runners-up in the Medical and Health category.
Christopher Dizon, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel and Daniele Russo placed third in the Environmental Science category.
The following students were recognized for their work at the Carey High School Science Fair:
In high school, Ivan Chin and Annmarie Schurr took first place; Second place went to Jamie David and Natalie Osorio; and Christina Daniel, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel and Fia Thomas finished third.
In middle school, Joseph Barker, Lily Maglio and Valerie Morales Luna took first place; Second place went to Onyx Karejwa and Christopher Sebber; and Makayla Grill, Hannah John, Emma Kirrane, Emily VanDunk and Samantha Walter finished third.
