Forty firefighters are fighting a “large” fire in the port

About 40 firefighters are working on the scene of a “large” fire in the Port of Tyne.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service was called to Tyne Dock in South Shields at around 2.15pm BST.

The Port of Tyne confirmed the fire had affected the warehouse and no injuries had been reported.

People were advised to avoid the area and residents should keep doors and windows closed.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “Our first crew were on scene within two minutes of receiving the call, with six fire engines and two ladder platforms on site.”
