Due to severe weather conditions, Wednesday’s series finale between the Red Sox and Blue Jays has been suspended and will resume on Monday, August 26 at 2:05 p.m. for a split doubleheader.

The game was called off shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the top of the second inning after heavy rain and thunderstorms moved into the area. By the time the match was called with a 1:48 delay, the warning track had begun to flood and water was collecting on the pitch. Taking into account the weather forecast, there was little chance of the match continuing.

The tarp rolled onto the field with one out, one man on the field, and the score was still tied 0-0. At this point, Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford had thrown 22 pitches, recording two strikeouts and two walks over 1.1 scoreless innings. Yariel Rodriguez, Toronto’s starting pitcher, threw 15 pitches in a scoreless first half.

It’s unlikely that either pitcher would be able to return to the field after a long layoff, so the decision to postpone the game saved both sides from having to pay their fair share of taxes.

The Red Sox will have a day off on Thursday before beginning a three-game homestand against the San Diego Padres this weekend. Nick Pivetta will start Friday, Tanner Houck will take over Saturday and Josh Winckowski will pitch the final out on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Toronto will travel to the Bronx to play four games against the New York Yankees.
