When we first wrote about the comic book Year of the Reds, we asked, “What if Roy Of The Rovers had done this in 2000?” We no longer have to ask the question “what if”… This way you can also publish your creator-owned comic through Rebellion. Create it for another publisher and forward it. This is how John Wagner, Alan Grant AND Dan Cornwell‘S Year of the Reds comic book series, science fiction version Roy from Roverspreviously published by BHP Comics, is now published in Judge Dredd Megazine, although unfortunately Alan couldn’t see it. The two previous Year of the Reds stories will be published in Judge Dredd Megazine first, before they publish a new third volume by Wagner and Cornwall in 2025. Glasgow-based BHP Comics closed late last year.

“What would happen if an alien outlaw crashed on Earth and stole the identity of the first person he met – only to find out that person was a famously egotistical football player? This is the problem that Rok with the Reds faces. A Year with the Reds, originally published in two volumes, is a dark comedy about revenge, redemption and inheritance. It features Rok of Arkadi, an alien who seeks refuge on Earth after his home world is destroyed by bounty hunters. However, his attempts to stay under the radar become complicated when he has the opportunity to meet arrogant young football player Kyle Dixon, a bad boy who is causing problems for his struggling team. Assuming Kyle’s identity, Rok suddenly finds himself in the spotlight: not only does he have to protect himself from ruthless alien bounty hunters – but he also has games to win! Rok will have to learn to love the beautiful game if he wants to keep his cover, or he will risk being captured by his enemies… or worse, demoted!”

John Wagner said: “Rok fans kept asking for a third series of our alien footballer saga, but as much as Dan and I wanted to do it, we couldn’t see a way to make it happen. So when Rebellion stepped in and agreed to run it on the Judge Dredd megazine, we went from “sick as parrots” to “overjoyed” faster than you could say “Fergie time.” We are also more than pleased that the first and second parts of the book will be reprinted first, which will help us bring this story to a wider audience. As regular readers will tell you, you don’t have to love football to enjoy Year of the Reds. As for the third installment – provisionally titled “Year of the World” – the fate of the human race may be in the hands of our alien hero… not to mention the more important matter of advancing the Radford Reds!”
