Man arrested after 3 injured during Euro 2024 – DW – 27.06.2024

Police in Stuttgart arrested one man early Thursday evening after three people were injured in an altercation during a public viewing of the Euro 2024 soccer match between Turkey and the Czech Republic.

A 25-year-old suspect was arrested and police cordoned off the area around Schlossplatz.

Initial findings indicate that a knife was used in the incident, the police added.

The injured were taken to hospitals. The services confirmed that there is no direct threat to the population.

The public screening area on Schlossplatz square in southwestern Germany can accommodate up to 30,000 spectators.

What happened in the Türkiye-Czech Republic match?

On Wednesday, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic in the last group match of Euro 2024 and secured 1/8th place in the match against Austria.

For the first time in 16 years, Türkiye advanced to the knockout stages of a major tournament.

In the 20th minute of the match, the Czech Republic’s squad was reduced to 10 players when Antonin Barak received the first red card in Euro history.

In this match, Hakan Calhanoglu and Cenk Tosun scored goals for Turkey, while Tomas Soucek scored the only goal for the Czech Republic.

After the final whistle, there were unpleasant scenes when fans ran onto the pitch and Czech striker Tomas Chory was shown a red card.
