A man arrested in connection with the Westminster booby trap scandal, believed to be a Labor Party member, has been released on bail.

A man in his 20s was arrested in Islington on Wednesday on suspicion of harassment and offenses under the Internet Safety Act.

The Labor Party was notified of the arrest of a party member and suspended him, LBC understands.

The man has since been released until the end of September and “an investigation is ongoing,” the Met said on Thursday.

The investigation was launched following reports earlier this year of unsolicited messages being sent to MPs and others containing links to Parliament.

Former MP William Wragg resigned from his Tory seat after it was revealed he had given the phone numbers of other MPs to a man using a dating app.

He said he was “scared” that the man “had something compromising about him” because he had previously shared intimate photos of himself.

The unknown scammer is said to have used the aliases ‘Charlie’ and ‘Abi’ while sending flirtatious messages in an attempt to trick MPs and other political figures into sending explicit images.

Mr. Wragg resigned as Chairman of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee of the House of Commons and as Vice-Chairman of the 1922 Committee.

Fellow Tory Dr Luke Evans has called for a full review of the parliamentary system for investigating incidents reported by MPs after he was also targeted.

A Met spokesman said: “On Wednesday, June 26, police executed a warrant at an address in Islington.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of harassment and offenses under the Internet Safety Act.

“He was arrested and has since been free on bail until the end of September.

“The arrest follows an investigation by the Met’s Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team following reports of unsolicited messages sent to MPs and others.

“The investigation is ongoing.”
