An event was held at Cawley’s Hotel in Tubbercurry on Thursday 13th June to mark ‘World Elder Abuse Day’. The event was a collaboration between Sligo County LEADER Partner Company (SLPC), the Police and the HSE. The aim of this event was to bring together some of the older people in our communities for an informative and positive social event. The event was opened by Margaret Heffernan, SLPC Operations Manager, who welcomed participants and introduced the services SLPC provides in the community. Many of the people in attendance attend the Day Centers in Tubbercurry, Ballymote and Gurteen and buses have been arranged to take them to the event.

Some of the other speakers included; Safeguarding & Protection – provided by the HSE, Legal advice on Wills, Investments and Assets – provided by Eamonn Gallagher (Rochford Gallagher & Co Solicitors), Age Friendly Alliance Services – provided by Frances Browne (Co-Coordinator Sligo Age Friendly Alliance), Home Retrofits and Grant Availability – provided by Peadar (Retrofit Ready) and Information on how to avoid Scams/Fraud – provided by Sergeant Cara Kiernan (Crime Prevention Officer). The speeches were concluded by John Feerick, CEO of SLPC, who paid tribute to all the staff at the Day Centre from SLPC and all the agencies who were present on the day.

Attendees were also treated to lunch followed by a prize draw with music from Colm and Siobhan O’Donnell. Special guest on the day was Sligo Rose Megan McCormack.
