Chino police fatally shot a man they say pointed a knife at an officer responding to a domestic violence call.

According to Chino police, the confrontation occurred around 10:15 p.m. last Thursday, June 20, outside an apartment building in the 12800 block of 10th Street.

Responding officers were directed to 43-year-old Chino resident Jose Angel Mendoza.

“Mendoza brandished a knife and refused to comply with the officer’s commands,” reads the police press release. “Mendoza then advanced on the officer with a knife raised above his head and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Area resident Renee Sundberg told KNN News, an independent news organization that occasionally contributes to the Southern California News Group, that she heard one shot, then three more. She then saw officers treating Mendoza as he lay on the ground.

“It wasn’t looking good for this guy,” Sandberg said.

Mendoza died at the hospital. Police spokesman Sgt. Frank Acuna said police had no prior contact with Mendoza.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting and asked anyone with information to contact 909-890-4904.
