Tory election betting poll: ‘Totally unacceptable’ if rules are broken, says Welsh Secretary

Labor has suspended a party member following his arrest in the honeytrap scandal that rocked Westminster.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man was arrested in Islington this morning following an investigation in April when a number of MPs, staff and political journalists received “unsolicited messages”.

Amid allegations of gambling at Westminster, Sir Keir Starmer has refused to change betting rules in light of the growing betting scandal.

During a campaign visit to Leicestershire, the Labor leader said he was “opposed to going down the path of changing the rules” and blamed the politicians involved in the saga.

It was published as he welcomed his response to the Gambling Conission investigation. Labor candidate Kevin Craig has shown assertive leadership in contrast to Sunak’s “passivity”.

Sir Ed Davey admitted he placed a bet on the outcome of the 2010 general election, and Tory cabinet minister Alister Jack insisted he had not broken any rules after placing bets on the date of the general election.

As we approach Election Day, the Prime Minister and Sir Keir Starmer will go head to head in the final televised debate tonight on the BBC at 8.15pm.

Interview with Craig Williams for the Gambling Commission

The Gambling Commission has interviewed Tory candidate and former parliamentary adviser Rishi Sunak accused of using insider information to place bets on the election date.

According to reports by Sky News, the hearing took place today and Williams was “biased and questioned by two former police officers and a former HMRC official who are now investigators at the commission”.

He cleverly admits that the argument while placing bets was a distraction for him

The Home Secretary admitted that the betting scandal distracted voters from “really important issues” in the election campaign.

Cleverly said he was “furious that people who should be motivated solely by public service” would bet on the election.

He added: “Of course this distracts from the really important issues.

“This is important. We will let the Gambling Commission do its job. However, as I say, I would much prefer to talk about choosing low taxes for the Conservatives and high taxes for Labour.”

He cleverly attacks Labour’s border control plans

James Cleverly said Labour’s “great idea” on border control was to create an organization that already exists and does less than the Tories but hopes to do better.

The interior minister told reporters: “Their border command is the small boat operational command.

“Their returns unit does immigration enforcement… but they are going to remove the Rwanda program.

“Their great idea for border control is to do less than we currently do and hope that it will produce better results.”

Labor expects Rishi Sunak to throw the sink at Keir Starmer during a BBC debate

Labor sources expect Rishi Sunak to throw the kitchen sink at Keir Starmer during tonight’s BBC debate. Millions are expected to watch the gameplay, Kate Devlin reports.

Number 10 urged those at the start of the campaign, believing their man would defeat the Labor leader.

However, the polls show no changes, and with almost a week left until election day, he has fewer and fewer chances to win over voters.

Tice: Farage is not campaigning in Scotland for security reasons

Richard Tice has claimed that Nigel Farage is not campaigning for Reform UK in Scotland because it is not safe for him to do so.

The Reform leader said Farage’s latest visit was “frankly dangerous”.

He added: “It was just dangerous. It wasn’t safe. You have to keep your leaders safe and protected, and we can share the burden, and that’s what I’m doing. I’m delighted to be here.

He cleverly refuses to say whether the betting rules should be changed

James Cleverly declined to say whether political betting rules should be changed in light of the election date row.

During a campaign visit to Nottinghamshire, the Home Secretary told broadcasters: “We’ll see what the Gambling Commission says because obviously we don’t know yet whether any existing rules have been broken or whether new rules need to be introduced in place.

“So we said we would not comment on the Gambling Commission investigation. We stick to it. We will let them do their job and listen very carefully to what they have to say when they are done.”

He also said: “My position is clear, the prime minister has been clear on this issue – people in public service should focus on serving the public. And that is why we have taken action.”

Libyan Democrats vow to attack “undecided conservatives” in the final week of the election campaign.

Libya Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has vowed to try to talk to “everyone, especially undecided Conservatives” in the final week of the general election campaign.

Speaking in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, he said: “We will not take anyone’s vote for granted. We will be working until 10pm on July 4 to get the people’s votes out.

“It’s clear that quite a number of people have decided to vote Liberal Democrat and that’s very, very exciting – people who were thinking about voting Labor and realized they couldn’t win in constituencies like Henley and in large parts of the Home Counties and the West Country, support us and I am grateful for that.

“But we want to persuade people who are a bit undecided, perhaps those who have voted Conservative before, to come and join us to push the Conservatives out of government – I think they should leave government.”

Sunak and Starmer went to the final pre-General Election debate on the BBC

As the election campaign draws to a close, Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer will go head to head in the debate final.

BBC’s Mishal Husain, who refereed during the extra-time, said she was ready to “stop” the party leaders.

She said: “When we get into the flow, the debate will last for an hour and a quarter.

“If necessary, I will urge both men to go back to what was in the question, clarifying points, and yes, I will probably need to interrupt from time to time.

“I cannot predict what the overall tone will be because it depends on the discussants, for whom these 75 minutes carry both opportunity and risk.”

The debate is taking place at Nottingham Trent University and will be broadcast on BBC One from 8.15pm.
