A man has been arrested after a woman was fatally stabbed at a home in Sydney’s inner west

Homicide detectives are investigating after a woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her roommate in Sydney’s west.

Officers were called to Clements Street in Russell Lea just after 11am when a resident reported hearing a woman screaming for help.

The woman is believed to be in her 50s and has not been formally identified.

The 42-year-old roommate was arrested at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Christine McDonald said the woman suffered “significant and multiple” stab injuries to her upper body.

She said the case was being investigated for domestic violence, given the pair lived together but were not believed to have been in an intimate relationship.

Superintendent McDonald said officers were on scene one minute after the call.

“Police responded quickly, knowing that the triple 0 call mentioned that the woman was screaming and needed help,” she said.

Neighbors told the ABC they had previously made numerous complaints to police about people living on the property.

Superintendent McDonald said the man moved in a few weeks ago and there were three other people in the house at the time of the woman’s death.

Superintendent McDonald said the man had a criminal record for reckless driving and drug-related offences.

The crime scene has been established.

Detectives were seen entering two neighboring properties where the body was found.

Local resident Julia Arnaout said the news was “shocking to everyone in the area”.

“My heart goes out to the victim’s family… we hope they find peace in this,” she said.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
