Michael Carleton, 29, of Paris was charged with aggravated assault, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

He was also charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

Carleton posted a $5,000 bond.

In an affidavit confirming Carleton’s arrest, Maine State Police Trooper Thomas Lauzon wrote that Carleton told him he pulled into the driveway of 403 Crocket Ridge Road in Norway on Tuesday evening. According to Lauzon, Carleton said he noticed an Oxford Police Department reserve officer, 31-year-old Norwegian Joe Correia, standing in the back of his vehicle. Carleton told Lauzon that he intentionally hit Correia with his vehicle, then exited the vehicle and struck Correia in the face.

Carleton then head-butted Correia in the face, breaking his nose, Lauzon wrote.

Lauzon said police found Correia sitting in his car with “serious injuries.”

Oxford Police Chief Rickie Jack said Correia was transferred from Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

State Police spokeswoman Shannon Moss said Correia was “undergoing surgery for non-life-threatening injuries.”

State police are investigating. Norwegian Police Chief Jeff Campbell said Norwegian police responded briefly to the incident before state police took over the investigation.

Moss said the investigation is ongoing.
