Dodgers Bat Boy Saves Shohei Ohtani

Dodgers Bat Boy Saves Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani had a record-setting game Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep against the Chicago White Sox, and he seemed to have some luck on his side as well.

As the Dodgers prepared to bat for one of their innings, video captured a seemingly errant pitch heading toward the dugout. Ohtani stood on the dugout steps and quickly moved out of the way as he scooped up a ball flying his way.

Javier Herrera, one of the Dodgers’ bat boys, got a last-second taste of baseball and raised his hands to make a catch that saved the presumptive National League MVP favorite. Ohtani ducked to his left and Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehmann dove to the right.

Will Ireton, Ohtani’s current interpreter and the Dodgers’ director of performance operations, came out of the clubhouse tunnel with his mouth open in a shocked expression, and manager Dave Roberts stood to applaud the play header from Herrera.

Herrera appeared to be the most unfazed of the group, nodding calmly and handing the ball to a fan sitting next to the dugout.

Ohtani finished the night 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. He set a new Dodgers franchise record behind a 10-game RBI streak. Ohtani is batting .444/.563/1.194 with eight homers and 17 RBIs during his 10-game RBI streak.

Dodgers Bat Boy Duties

In addition to helping retrieve players’ equipment during games, Dodgers batters are also responsible for bringing out new defensive lineup cards each time Roberts makes a pitching change and consistently bringing in baseballs to the home plate umpire, among other duties.
