LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) – A stranded boat on Lake Erie was “taking on water” in 5-foot waves when three people were rescued during severe weather Wednesday afternoon two miles offshore thanks to quick action by Lorain firefighters.

The engine on the “small aluminum” boat died during “very windy” conditions, said Capt. Frank Griffith.

Wasting no time, firefighters jumped onto a nearby private boat, navigated out into the choppy waters, jumped onto the boat, which was “stranded and in distress,” and then, according to officials, placed three adults on the boat that firefighters were using.

There were ambulances waiting nearby, but they weren’t needed.

“Aside from the fact that they were very cold and shaken, they were fine,” Griffith told FOX 8 News.

“Our firefighters always do a great job, that’s why they’re here to help and save people,” Griffith said.
