Serious doubts about the future of Reading Women have emerged after a takeover bid fell through at the final stage.

Fears have been growing in recent weeks over the future of the company, which was one of the country’s best, and a petition has been launched in the hope of persuading potential buyers to save it.

Funds from current owner Dai Yongge were not available to keep the team in the second division, but an offer to take over the women’s team only was accepted.

The case fell apart at a very late stage, the Reading Chronicle has learnt, with the deadline being 5pm this evening.

According to reports from The Guardian, this is due to “uncertainty about the club’s future owners.”

The club must now confirm to the FA which league it wants to play in, if any, ahead of next season.

Time will tell what will happen to a youth organization that will impact hundreds of girls in the county.

Talks to take over the football club as a whole are still ongoing, with former Wycombe Wanderers boss Rob Couhig leading the race.
