Students of the Central Committee watched the relay with the Olympic torch

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Olympic Torch Relay is an epic journey from the lighting of the flame at Olympia in April to the host city of the Olympic Games, Paris! It is a symbol of peace and has been part of the Olympic Games since 1936. You can follow the Olympic torch relay online!

Over fifty seventh graders from Academie Lafayette took part in a class trip to France. KSHB 41’s Lindsay Shively met with several people who had the opportunity to see the Olympic torch, or “Relais de la Flamme Olympique,” pass through the French city of Pau.

“It was really cool. It was like a lot of people were chasing it,” Luca Sciara said. “My landlady said it was like the Super Bowl for them.”

“I was really excited because my hostess said it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Evan Lee said.

“I feel like I will never experience something like this again,” Lennon Kupe said.

“There was a big parade and lots of people were celebrating,” said Sylvie Erdmann, who said she had been looking forward to the trip for years. “Kindergarten!”

Leslie Houfaidi, a former chaperone on the trips, is now retired and says she was one of the founders of the Academie Lafayette. She talked about how long she thinks the memories of not only the trip to France but also the country’s preparations for the Olympics will stay with them.

“Years later, ‘I was there when they were in Paris,’ because it’s really exciting to see that energy.”
