Employer of Indian man who died while working on Italian farm arrested – Firstpost

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal demanded humane treatment of workers and said Satnam Singh’s family was receiving all available support.

Satnam Singh, an Indian labourer who died in northern Italy, was not given proper care and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said his employer, who was responsible for his medical care, had been arrested.

MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal demanded that the workers be treated humanely and said that Satnam Singh’s family was being provided all possible support.

“His employer who was supposed to provide him medical care has been detained and the investigation is ongoing. We condemn such treatment. We call for humane treatment of workers. We are providing all possible assistance to his family,” Jaiswal said during his weekly briefing.

India also raised the issue with Italy and called for quick action against those responsible for his death.

Secretary (Consular Passports and Visas and Overseas Indian Affairs) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muktesh Pardeshi, raised the issue in a conversation with Luigi Maria Vignali, Director General for Migration Policy and Italians Abroad, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy.

Muktesh Pardeshi added that the Indian Embassy in Italy was in touch with Satnam Singh’s family for consular assistance and transfer of the body to India.

“@SecretaryCPVOIA Muktesh Pardeshi conveyed to Italian Director General @LuigiVignali our deep concern over the death of Satnam Singh and urged for swift action against those responsible. The Embassy is in touch with Satnam Singh’s family for consular assistance and transfer of the body of @MEAIndia,” the Indian Embassy in Italy wrote in a statement on June 26.

According to the Flai CGIL trade union, Indian national Satnam Singh died when he was abandoned on the street after an accident.

The accident that severed his hand occurred while he was working on a farm.

According to the Flai CGIL union, instead of receiving help from his employer, “Singh was dumped like a bag of garbage near his home.”

Earlier last week, the embassy said it was in contact with local authorities and that efforts were being made to contact the family and provide them with consular assistance.
