BALTIMORE — A judge on Friday granted the request of a driver convicted of causing death in a crash on I-695 that killed six construction workers last year.

Melachi Brown, 21, was placed on house arrest after a judge granted his request to be released from prison early.

It was brown originally sentenced to 10 years with all but three months of each charge suspended. Each charge was to be served consecutively for a total of 18 months in prison.

During his leniency hearing, Brown said he suffers from anxiety and depression and fears for his life while behind bars.

Brown will spend the remainder of his 18-month sentence on house arrest.

The brother of Sybil Dimaggio, one of the victims of the fatal crash, said the stipend request was devastating for his family and begged the judge not to release Brown from prison.

The video was obtained by WJZ shows two cars colliding at high speed.

Last summer, WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren met with Dylan DiMaggio and Nora DiMaggio, Sybil DiMaggio’s children.

They talked about the pain of losing your mother, and calling for more safety precautions for construction workers in work zones.

“In one moment, your whole world is turned upside down, nothing is the same,” Nora DiMaggio said. “You can’t cope with it, you can’t move on. It’s just awful.”
