Firefighters rescue dog and groundhog trapped in well under Lexington Park residence – Southern Maryland News Net

On Friday, June 28, 2024, at approximately 9:19 a.m., firefighters from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and St. Mary’s County Animal Control responded to a home in the 19000 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park in reference to a reported animal rescue.

A 911 caller reported that a dog and possibly a groundhog or raccoon were trapped in a well underneath a home.

Bay District volunteers responded by dispatching Rescue Squad 3, Engine 32 and Chief 3, employing 10 personnel. Crews arrived on scene and found that the residence’s owners were in the process of renovating the residence when they discovered an open well underneath the home. While filling the well, a dog and a groundhog were discovered trapped in a well approximately 5 meters deep.

Police arrived on the scene to assist as the homeowner and dog owner argued over who would pay for the damages, as firefighters could only access the well by cutting open the floor of the newly renovated home.

A large section of flooring was cut out and removed, and then firefighters used a 5-foot ladder, a rope system and animal control equipment to allow one firefighter to safely enter the well and remove the marmot.

The groundhog was taken into the care of St. Mary’s County Animal Control with unknown injuries.

A firefighter re-entered the well to safely remove the trapped dog, which was placed in the care of its owner, while veterinarians remained on alert for its injuries.

Both animals were rescued in less than 1 hour and 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported and the homeowner stated that the newly discovered well would be filled and sealed and that the floor, crawl space and damage to the home would be repaired themselves.
