Announcing on Facebook that he was leaving the service, Church Stretton Fire Brigade wrote that crews were “sad” to have to say goodbye to their colleague after almost 19 years.

“At the end of this month Wayne will be hanging up his helmet and saying goodbye after 18.5 years with us,” the fire service said. “We would like to thank Wayne for his commitment and dedication to us and the community of Church Stretton.

“We would also like to thank his wife Pauline, who had to endure a lot and be unable to attend many events while Wayne was away, and Church Stretton Primary School, who allowed him to leave work to go to the scene.

“We will soon meet for a dignified farewell, but for now, thank you, Wayne, and I wish you all the best in the future.”
