A cow rescued from a mine shaft by firefighters

Firefighters rescued a cow from a mine shaft in Cornwall.

Crews from St Dennis used specialist rescue equipment to retrieve the animal, which fell about 20m (65ft) into a shaft near Indian Queens on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities said a “safe working area” was created before two firefighters successively lowered the shaft to sedate the cow and secure it with special animal recovery equipment.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the cow was lifted to the ground and then “left in the care of the farmer and vet who attended the scene”.
